Emotions ran high in the heart of Sioux Falls recently when Jefferson High students from the Advanced Wood Tech class showed up with gifts for people living at the Veteran's Community Project. The community of tiny homes is a place for veterans to get back on their feet and find stable work, build their financial futures, and take care of themselves and their families.
JHS Teacher Steve Hirsch heard about Project HOME from the organizer in another state and knew that the project would be a meaningful way for his students to learn carpentry skills and also give something back to veterans who have given so much to our country.
Students spent 3-4 weeks perfecting the wooded flags and included a signed message on the back of each one to let recipients know who made the flag. Schools in Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, and now South Dakota participate in Project HOME with the goal of building a network across the US that communicates, collaborates, and works together to improve their communities.
Great work JHS!
